Silica gel for food is an inorganic macromolecular colloidal material made from silicic acid condensation. Its main component is SiO2 · nH2O, with the content of more than 98%. It is non-toxic, tasteless, and has stable chemical performance. Under normal conditions, it does not react with any acid, alkali or salt except caustic soda and hydrofluoric acid. Because it is a colloidal structure, it has many micropores and a large specific surface area.


The pore diameter of edible silica gel is about 8-10nm, with a specific surface area of 300-500m2/g, and its surface is hydrophilic. It has a strong water absorption capacity. Under high humidity conditions, its water absorption capacity can reach 80% - 100% of its own weight. Therefore, food grade silica gel can be used as external drying agent for food and medicine. As the edible silica gel is refined and sterilized, it can be directly mixed with food and drugs as required to ensure the food is dry and eaten with food, without any toxic and side effects on human body.
